Lesson 7: Zotero - A Web Research Assistant

Think (e-Portfolio)
1. Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) when you needed to collect, manage, and keep a record of citation details of your Web research? How effective do you think these information management strategies were?
2. In your view, what kinds of things would you want a Web research tool to be able to do?
Before I began this course, I usually printed out the website I wanted to use, and highlighted the parts I thought would be useful. However, by the time I finished the research, the number of pages that has been printed out would be huge, and I lose track of what has been printed out. It is usually impossible to find the quotes I wanted to use out of all the sheets of paper. This method of information management is absolutely ineffective, for it is waste of paper, and also time, when looking back on the printed out sheets, and searching for the part I need.
In my point of view, it would make web research so much easier, if websites, managed by professionals of that field comes up first thing. It always makes me frustrated, when I do some research, and only blogs or pages managed by amatures, with assumingly, false informations comes up on the list.

Explore (e-Portfolio)
It is easy to learn a new way to collect, manage, and cite your research sources. The video that follows explains more about Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Watch it a few times, stop and start it at critical points, take some notes. Try to identify a few things about using Zotero that could make studying easier for you. In the Zotero Quick Start Guide, under 'Introductory Screencasts', please watch 1) ztour, & 2) zdemo.
zotero enables us to save bibliographic information, during the research. This is very useful, and makes research easier, as we do not have to note down the book of relevance each time. We can add as many books as we want, and later, save the ones to use. Being able to categorize the information makes it easy to see, and use the information. In addition, we can add our thought and opinion of that reference by using the notepad.

Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write a post reflecting on Zotero with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.
1. What are the main skills needed to use Zotero?
2. What are the affordances of Zotero (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
3. How can Zotero be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
4. What skills and understandings have you learned about Zotero that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
1. The skills required in using zotero is first, the ability to be able to add it on to firefox. In addition, we need to learn how this system works, in order to use it efficiently.
2. zotero facilitates the organization of research resources. In addition, by using the information saved on it, you can easily write the bibliography, at the end of the work.
3. Keeping the database of the research materials would make it easier to access the book of your choice whenever you want to.
4. This system would help essay writing, or other studies greatly as the relevant references that could be used can be kept track of in one place.

Hiroki, Under 'Do', which two of the four things did you actually learn to do? You needed to take notes on what you learned during your practice. This is the evidence that confirms that you have learned to use at least two features of Zotero. Grade: D+

Hiroki, I have also read your late-revised Lesson Lesson 2, and the work you have submitted on the final day as late work for lessons 3, 4, 5, and 6. There is a lot to like in your written answers, you can write well. It is also enough I believe to prevent you from failing Social Computing, but please understand that it is wrong to 'disappear' for weeks and then submit 6 out of 7 pieces of writing on the final day. It is wrong for all sorts of reasons, for yourself, for your classmates, and for your teacher. It is unacceptable behaviour, that really calls for you to review some of your attitudes. From this message, I believe you can sense I am very unhappy about this situation. I also believe that you can respond in a positive way, so that you are able to get a better return on the time you invest at ICU. Thank you Hiroki.
