Lesson 7: Zotero - A Web Research Assistant

Think (e-Portfolio)
1. Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) when you needed to collect, manage, and keep a record of citation details of your Web research? How effective do you think these information management strategies were?
2. In your view, what kinds of things would you want a Web research tool to be able to do?
Before I began this course, I usually printed out the website I wanted to use, and highlighted the parts I thought would be useful. However, by the time I finished the research, the number of pages that has been printed out would be huge, and I lose track of what has been printed out. It is usually impossible to find the quotes I wanted to use out of all the sheets of paper. This method of information management is absolutely ineffective, for it is waste of paper, and also time, when looking back on the printed out sheets, and searching for the part I need.
In my point of view, it would make web research so much easier, if websites, managed by professionals of that field comes up first thing. It always makes me frustrated, when I do some research, and only blogs or pages managed by amatures, with assumingly, false informations comes up on the list.

Explore (e-Portfolio)
It is easy to learn a new way to collect, manage, and cite your research sources. The video that follows explains more about Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Watch it a few times, stop and start it at critical points, take some notes. Try to identify a few things about using Zotero that could make studying easier for you. In the Zotero Quick Start Guide, under 'Introductory Screencasts', please watch 1) ztour, & 2) zdemo.
zotero enables us to save bibliographic information, during the research. This is very useful, and makes research easier, as we do not have to note down the book of relevance each time. We can add as many books as we want, and later, save the ones to use. Being able to categorize the information makes it easy to see, and use the information. In addition, we can add our thought and opinion of that reference by using the notepad.

Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write a post reflecting on Zotero with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.
1. What are the main skills needed to use Zotero?
2. What are the affordances of Zotero (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
3. How can Zotero be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
4. What skills and understandings have you learned about Zotero that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
1. The skills required in using zotero is first, the ability to be able to add it on to firefox. In addition, we need to learn how this system works, in order to use it efficiently.
2. zotero facilitates the organization of research resources. In addition, by using the information saved on it, you can easily write the bibliography, at the end of the work.
3. Keeping the database of the research materials would make it easier to access the book of your choice whenever you want to.
4. This system would help essay writing, or other studies greatly as the relevant references that could be used can be kept track of in one place.

Lesson 6: Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Think
Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) when you need to collaborate with other students on a project outside of class? In other words, what do you usually do if you want to show someone what you have done? What do you do if you need to work on it at the same time? How do you feel about doing collaborative work? Please write a brief description.
When I had to do group work with other students in other classes, we usually divided up what needs to be done into small sections and everyone took a responsibility in doing their part. Then, the work was sent to the group leader by e-mail, who would put all the parts together to form one project. In addition, I could show what I have done by sending the same mail to others in the group if I wanted. I feel that this was the most efficient way in doing group work, as everyone can work on the project at the same time, and everyone can have the same amount of responsibility in doing the work. I do not dislike collaborative work if this way of doing the project is taken, as it is more or less the same as working on my own, being able to work at my own pace.

It is easy to learn a new way to create, share, publish, collaborate, and access you work anywhere. The video that follows explains more about Google Docs and Spreadsheets. Watch it a few times, stop and start it at critical points (the narration is fast!), take some notes. Try to identify two or three things about using GDS that could make studying easier for you. Please watch this video
I felt, that Google Docs was extremely useful, especially in making power point presentations with other people.
It has been always difficult to keep the format of slides, (such as font, and backgrounds) the same. Therefore the person, who had to put the whole work together needed to do so much work in making it have the same format as slides of different format was sent by everyone. However, by using Google Docs, everyone can have the shared idea on the format.
I liked the fact that the work does not need to be sent to other people whenever there were updates on the work. Usually, the number of new mails increase greatly, as everyone is sending the group members what have been done. By being able to share work on line, we can always see the latest form of the work at once, and also add on some information if there is the need, even if it was not the part I have not been working on.

Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write a post reflecting on GDS with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.
1. What are the main skills needed to use GDS?
2. What are the affordances of GDS (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
3. How can GDS be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
4. What skills and understandings have you learned about GDS that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
1. The main skills needed to use the GDS are the skills in being able to upload the files, and being able to edit the work. We need to have understanding and knowledge on how GDS works, in order to be able to use it.
2. GDS makes doing the collaborative work extremely easier by being able to share the files online, and it is kept safe, with password.
3. Storing, and sharing the files on the Google Docs would keep the members connected to learning resources.
Everyone has the access to it, by having the shared password.
4. Being able to share the work online enables people to work on the project at the same time, without having to spend time on talking about what needs to be done, and how it would be done. I think this would more or less eliminate frustrations that would be felt in doing collaborative work.

Lesson 5: RSS - Rich Site Summary

Think (e-Portfolio)
1. Which sites do you visit regularly? Make a list (4~5 is fine). Before you began this course, what did you do (or still do) to keep yourself up to date on new content posted to your favourite sites?
I regularly visit google.com, yahoo.com, msn.com, rakuten.co.jp, and japantimes.co.jp. To keep myself up to date, I visit these pages often, and always give the whole page a careful look, and see if there are new contents.

Explore (e-Portfolio)
1. Websites that display a button similar to the ones here on the right have an RSS feed that you can subscribe to. Visit a few of the sites that you listed above (Think step). Look over each site carefully, can you find an RSS button? You might need to scroll down the page, and you will need to look carefully if it is a 'busy' page. Which of your favourite sites provide an RSS feed? Write RSS next to each of these sites in your list. Which ones don't?
Can you think why some sites do not?
google.com RSS yahoo.com RSS msn.com RSS amazon.co.jp RSS japantimes.co.jp RSS
I have discovered that all of my favorite pages provide the RSS button.
Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write a post reflecting on RSS with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.
1. What are the main skills needed to use Google Reader?
2. What are the affordances of RSS (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
3. How can Google Reader be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
4. What skills and understandings have you learned about RSS that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
1. The main skills needed to use the Google Reader is being able to find the RSS button, and being able to add on the favorite pages to it. In addition, we need to understand how the page works, and how RSS is useful to us.
2. By having RSS, we do not have to search by ourselves for updates, as it enables us to see at once, what has been added lately.
3. We can keep our favorite pages all in one place, so Google Reader could become one big database of our studies, with latest updates.
4. People would be able to get the updates, easily, therefore they would always have the latest information and are up to date with the contents.

Lesson 4: Social Bookmarking

Think (e-Portfolio)
Before you began this course, what arrangements did you make (or still do) to save your favourite web pages?
What provisions do you make to be able to access them whenever and wherever you need them?
Before I began this course, I had the bookmark bar, near the top of the window of the internet, and I stored my most favorite pages there. It enabled me to access the sites by just clicking on the title of the page, whenever I wanted to. Other sites were stored in the bookmark folder.

Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write a post reflecting on social bookmarking with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.
1. What are the main skills needed to use Delicious?
2. What are the affordances of social bookmarking (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
3. How can Delicious be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
4. What skills and understandings have you learned about social bookmarking that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
1. The skills needed to use Delicious are being able to add on the favorite pages.
2. Social bookmarking makes studying easy, by being able to access the pages of our choice at once. In addition, we can look for people with similar goals, and look at their bookmarks for more useful websites.
3. Delicious can be a great connection to learning resources as all the favorite pages can be stored in one place.
4. Social bookmarking would make learning efficient by being able to access the relevant information at once.

Lesson Three: Blog as e-Portfolio

Think (e-Portfolio)
Before you began this course, what arrangements did you make (or still do) to be able to show to others (and to yourself), what you know and what you can do?
Before I started this course, I have written resume of myself, including information of my school, my qualification, to be able to show what kind of academic environment I have been in, and also I would include information on my personal character, hobbies, skills, and what I am interested in.

Explore (e-Portfolio)
1. Do you need an e-portfolio? Please watch this presentation. (This presentation describes the use of a wiki, while you will use a blog for this e-portfolio)
2. What are the main advantages and disadvantages you see in having an e-portfolio in addition to (or in place of) a traditional resume? Please see some of the examples below.

E-Portfolio does seem very useful and I am quite interested in using it; however, there is no opportunity to use it for now, unfortunately.
The main advantage is that the portfolio can be shared with other people. In addition to that, having the information online would prevent accidents such as having it thrown away. However, by having it on paper, the resume can be seen whenever, and wherever, even if there are no internet environment.

Explain (e-Portfolio)
Write a post reflecting on your blog as an e-Portfolio with reference to the four SCICU Key Questions.
1. What are the main skills needed to use your e-Portfolio?
2. What are the affordances of your e-Portfolio (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?
3. How can your e-Portfolio be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?
4. What skills and understandings have you learned from creating your e-Portfolio that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?
1. The main skills needed to use e-Portfolio is the skill to be able to organize important information about yourself, and being able to tell people what kind of person you are.
2. E-Portfolio makes it possible for people to share their personal resumes online.
3. This is useful in showing what has been learnt, and also, in planning about the future career.
4. E-Portfolio is important in learning as it makes you remember about, and also gives people confidence in what you can do, and the skills you have.

Lesson Two: Browser as PLE

Think (e-Portfolio)
Before you began this course, what arrangements did you make (or still do) to try and ensure that you could do any work you wanted to do during the day?
Before I started this course, I have listed up what needs to be done the following day, in the night before I went to sleep and used it as a "to-do" checklist. During the day, I always keep in mind not to waste any time.

Explore (e-Portfolio)
View a couple of these screenshot tours 1 2 3 4 showing how different users have developed a personal work environment in Firefox (FF). Most users have provided details on what extensions or tweaks they've made to develop their browser as a personal work environment. Take notes on some of the features that look interesting.
These screenshots were very interesting as they all look very different, despite the fact it all being the same Firefox environment. It seems fun to customize the personal work environment, depending on the beliefs or hobbies.

Lesson 2: Browser as PLE

Explain

1. What are the main skills needed to use your PLE?The skills needed to use PLE are just the foundamental skills to use the computer.

2. What are the affordances of your PLE (what does it make possible, what does it impede)?By using PLE, we can enjoy comfortable browsing. It means the efficiency of our work improves greatly.

3. How can your PLE be used to network professionally and connect you (& other students) to learning resources?PLE makes us to reach the resources that we request quickly and efficiently. It can be used for more comfortable network works.

4. What skills and understandings have you learned from creating a PLE that may promote your development as an effective learner in the digital age?I learned the skill to cordinate bookmarks and understood the system about the screenshots. I think the skils I attained would help me for more convinient and efficient work on the web.
